Sesame (ses´eme) is the dried, oval-shaped seed of the herb Sesamum indicum. Also known as Til, bennes and gingelly, it is an important oilseed crop.Africa is considered to be the primary centre of origin of this crop.India and Japan are considered as secondary centres of origin.

Sesame seed is an important ingredient in culinary traditions of many countries, especially the countries in West Asia. Sesame seed carry 55% of oil content. Sesame oil is used for cooking, cosmetics, paints and lubricants. The byproduct obtained after extracting oil is used as feed for livestock.

Global output of sesame seed is estimated at around 3 million ton per year with India and China dominating production. Global sesame output occurs mainly around few countries in Asia and Africa. Global sesame seed trade is estimated 500,000-600,000 ton per year.

India accounts for nearly 30% of global output and plays an important role in global sesame business. Mainly cultivated in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa and West Bengal, sesame seeds come in three varieties in the country -- yellowish, red and black seeds.

The eastern region comprising West Bengal, Orissa, Assam and Andhra Pradesh mostly produce red and black variety sesame which is inferior to the white sesame grown in Maharashtra and other western states. In the eastern region sesame is normally sown after the potato crop with mild doses of fertilizers. Not much irrigation is required.

The total global production of sesame seed sums up to around 30 lakh tons annually, China being the highest seed producer. The production as well as consumption of sesame seeds has been in the up trend since the last decade and both the figures are rising steadily.

Sesame seed oil has been used as healing oil for thousands of years. Sesame oil is mentioned in the Vedas as excellent for humans. It is naturally antibacterial for common skin pathogens, naturally antiviral and a natural anti inflammatory agent.

In recent experiments in Holland by Ayurvedic physicians, the oil has been used in the treatment of several chronic disease processes, including hepatitis, diabetes and migraines.

Sesame seed contains a high percentage of oil (ca 55%), which has a very good stability due to the presence of natural anti-oxidants.There are three types of sesame seed, depending on the colour of the seeds, namely: white, brown and black. The white-seeded varieties have higher oil content than their black-seeded counterpart.

White Seeds

The colour of the testa of these seeds ranges from cream to white. These are grown in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh. Another type of white seeds with distinctive characteristics of the oil is also grown in some areas of Assam, West Bengal and Tripura.

Hulled Sesame Seeds

Mechanically Hulled Sesame Seeds are considered as the most nutritious seeds because of its protein and valuable Minerals. The husk hull (skin) of these seeds are removed hence are called as Hulled Sesame Seeds.

Product Appearance and Description

Our brown sesame seeds are small tasty, unhulled seeds that are used in cereals, crackers, spreads, drinks, casseroles, granola, candies, soups, salads, fish and baked goods. Delicious when toasted and sprinkled on grains or main dishes. Known as tahini when ground into a butter. A nutritious mayonnaise substitute may be made by simply blending sesame seeds with water.

Black Seeds

The colour of the testa of the seed ranges from dark-brown to black. These are grown in Orissa,West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

Product Appearance and Description

The black sesame seed is less common and has a more concentrated flavor than other sesame seeds. Black sesame seeds are especially good on salmon and other fish. Sesame is an adaptable and drought resistant tropical annual plant. It grows in plains as well as up to an elevation of 1250 metres. It requires fairly hot conditions during growth to produce maximum yields. Temperature around 25-27 C encourages rapid growth. Sesame seed can be grown on wide variety of soils provided they are well-drained, but it thrives best on sandy loam with adequate soil moisture. The crop grows best in soils having alkalinity in the range of 5.5 to 8.0. Sesame seed is cultivated as Kharif crop in north India but in south India it is cultivated both in Kharif and as Rabi seasons.
